Staying up-to-date with Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a pivotal part of maintaining licensure and ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare. In New Jersey, the CME requirements for MD and DO physicians are designed to encompass a broad range of medical knowledge and skills. These requirements not only focus on the quantity of CME credits but also on specific areas of medical education.
CME requirements for New Jersey MD and DO physicians:
- Total CME Credits: Physicians are required to complete 100 hours of CME every two years.
- Category I Credits: At least 40 of these hours must be Category I credits.
- Category II Credits: Up to 60 hours can be Category II credits.
- Cultural Competence:
- Physicians licensed prior to March 24, 2005, must complete an additional 6 hours of cultural competence training, beyond the 100-hour requirement.
- For those licensed after this date, the 6 hours of cultural competence training can be included within the 100-hour requirement.
- End-of-Life Care: Two hours of the required Category I credits must be in end-of-life care.
- Prescribing Opioids: One hour of Category I credits must cover topics related to prescription opioid drugs, including responsible prescribing practices, alternatives to opioids for managing pain, and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.
- Orientation Program for Newly Licensed Physicians: The Board requires attendance at an orientation program, but no CME credit is awarded for this.
- Sexual Misconduct: As of May 2025, 2 hours of CME in sexual misconduct is required.
